The Overrated Closer Position
This is one area in which I would agree with the Sabermetricians. I am not saying you can throw anyone in there, but I don’t think you necessarily have to pay the contract the Phillies did to Papelbon. Papelbon has been very good in save situations, but I have to wonder if they could have signed someone else and used some of that money to bolster the bullpen overall. Even more worrisome is the combination of money and years. A four-year contract for a 31 year-old pitcher who relies on his fastball is somewhat risky. Of course, Papelbon has been better than Madson who most likely would have hurt his elbow for the Phillies, too.
