The Sarge

Excellent article by Paul Hagan in Sports Week about Sarge Matthews. Basically it is about Sarge becoming more liked by fans now. Hagan argues that Sarge hasn’t changed, but that people have grown to like him after a rough first year.  I will say I did not care for Sarge at first, but I’ve grown to like him. However, I think he has gotten better.  Hagan dares to say Matthews can become like Richie Ashburn as a broadcaster which is pretty bold.  interspersed throughout the article are some of Sarge’s unintentional one-liners which are pretty funny.

“This is a pitch he usually always swings at.”

”Jair Jurrjens is a pretty good pitcher when he’s on the mound.” (my favorite)

“That’s why you have to hit the ball hard as many times as you can. Preferably every time up.”

“Not many second basemens will make that particular play right there.”

“Those foul tips either stay in the glove or not.”
