Don’t Like the Sound of This
Here’s a quote from the Phillies’ new hitting coach:
I’m the type of guy who likes to be aggressive at the plate but also selective. I understand about on-base percentage and all of that. I really do understand that. But at the same time, we have to be able to attack the fastball.”
Now, I understand that you need to hit the ball in order to win, but the last thing the Phillies’ hitters need is to be more aggressive. Utley almost never swings at the first pitch and his OBP is perennially the best on the team (until Chooch’s recent upswing, and Utley’s downswing).
Maybe it doesn’t matter. Can a hitting coach really make that big of a difference anyway? We’ll see. I’ll keep an open mind on this guy. You can read the full article here.
