By now you must know the Phillies signed another outfielder, Delmon Young. I am not crazy about this signing for a couple of reasons. First, he is most known for his checkered past. Most notorious and strange was his drunken anti-semitic rant last season in New York. Also, in 2006 he threw a bat at an umpire. While he said all the right things to the media, and maybe he has turned a corner, maybe he hasn’t. He could be a negative distraction to the team if he regresses to his past nonsense.
Amaro has said that the team did their investigations into his character, which I am sure they have. But he’s also not that good. He peaked in 2010 with the Twins when he hit .298/.333/.493 with 21 HR and 112 RBI. Last year he hit 18 HR but also was below the Rollins line with a .296 OBP. Yes, they only paid him 750,000 and yes, he’s only 27, but can he really come clost to replicating his 2010? If he does it could be the signing of the year for the MLB. Weight has been such an issue for Young that the Phillies will give him $600,000 if he can keep his weight under 230/235. Yes, we have left the real world a long time ago. Also, he hasn’t been playing the outfield on a regular basis in a while after DHing for most of last year. Oh, and he may start the season on the DL after having ankle surgery.
This will lead to an interesting spring as the only outfield spot settled is center. Aftet that we have Darin Ruf (who I really hope get a chance), Laynce Nix, perennial “this-is-the-year” man Dom Brown, John “I can only be effective for half a year” Mayberry Jr. and now Delmon Young. Young seems to have the edge in right as Amaro said the following: “Ideally, he’d be playing right field every day for us but that’s not etched in stone. That will happen when he shows that he can play every day in right field for us.” Are you listening, Dom? He’s talking to you! Matt Gelb of the Inquirer wrote about this topic today.
It won’t be long until spring training now, folks. Should be interesting….
