Phillies Release Cook= Good News

The Phillies released Aaron Cook today, so he will not be the “sixth starter” spoken about earlier. According to Jim Salisbury, this means the Phillies will attempt to rely on some promising minor leaguers should the need arise. I think this is good. While he had a nice spring, Cook has been atrocious over the last three years, posting a 5.54 ERA. The odds were he wouldn’t do much better here. The young guys Pettibone, Cloyd, Martin and Morgan would be just as good if not better and they would be getting some experience. Cloyd would probably be first up as he already has some big-league experience, and bringing up the other guys would start their major-league service clock, starting them on the path to free agency. You can read about it here.
