Here’s a story about Dave Montgomery speaking at a recent SABR convention. SABR is the Society for American Baseball Research. While it sounds like a historical organization, I believe SABR is more about “advanced metrics” or statistics. This is what “sabermetrics” means when you hear it. People who read this blog should know I am not a huge sabermetrics guy, but it has yielded some very good things. I just feel it can be overdone at time.
It’s too late at night to go into much detail, but he does speak about Amaro’s infamous “I don’t care about walks” comments and a stat I had never heard of called “weighted on-base average” or wOBA. It sounds like a useful stat.
