Ryan Madson, former relief pitcher for the Phillies, was released by the Angels today. He was having trouble coming back from Tommy John surgery and never actually pitched for the team. Madson, of course, had that great post-season in 2008 and, really, had five straight very good years for the Phillies. The Phillies didn’t want to sign him as a closer, which turned out to be the right decision, even with Papelbon, as Madson has had arm problems ever since. He hasn’t even pitched in a regular-season game since he left Philadelphia.
If he can pass a physical next spring, he may be worth inviting to Spring Training. I know the last thing we need is another guy in his 30s whose best years are behind him, but if you haven’t noticed, our bullpen is bad. Really bad.
