In more ways than one. I saw on philly.com that the Sporting News recently chose the most beloved player on each major league team and Ashburn was selected #1 for Philadelphia. I can’t argue with that one. This what they had to say about Whitey:
“Ashburn was a popular All-Star center fielder for the Phillies during the 1950s and a key player on the pennant-winning Whiz Kids of 1950. But his love affair with generations of Philadelphia fans was cemented during his decades as a wry color commentator on the team’s radio and TV broadcasts. All told, he was part of the Phillies’ family for all but three years from 1948 until his death in 1997.”
Looking at the list makes you glad you are not a fan of an expansion franchise, as their choice aren’t that great. And what’s up with that Roberto Alomar picture they used? Someone in the Sporting News must not like him.
“Video” Dan Stephenson of the Phillies staff has a quote in the piece that Ashburn is arguable the most beloved figure in all of Philly sports. I can’t think of someone more beloved. Can you?
