There have been some rumors regarding the Phillies being interested in David Price of the Rays. However, Ken Rosenthal (via mlbtraderumors.com) believes this would require the Phillies to give up too much like pitching prospect Jesse Biddle and Dom Brown. Even then, says Rosenthal, it may not be enough. I would definitely consider trading for Price. While I like Biddle and he is a hometown guy, I am concerned about his inability to throw strikes and I wouldn’t be shocked if last year was Brown’s best year. Price won the Cy Young in 2012 and had another good year last year. He’s just 28, but would be a free agent in three years.
I do agree with Rosenthal that Amaro needs to be creative this year. And I believe that involves trades; the Phillies problems can’t be solved by free agents. But at the same time, the Phillies can’t part with too many prospects as they are an aging team. I would definitely consider making Brown available, though.
